Soon after Lewis and Clark many illegal poachers and fur trappers began to head towards the fertile lands of Missouri River County. Flanked by the tranquil blue waters of the Mississippi river, the county is home to one of the major river systems of the country. The river also played a pivotal role in the transportation of fur to St. Louis by steam boats. With the advent of the railway tracks, the doors of Missouri River County were opened to the larger world.
Once a lush green and fertile wetland the area around the Missouri river was the home of the dinosaurs. Although no trace of these ancient residents can be found now, their fossils can still be discovered in the foot hills of the Rockies and the river banks of Missouri. The Fort Peck Dam Museum preserves fossils and models of T Rex, Cretaceous and Peck Rex. Phillips County Museum on the other hand preserves fossils of many species of dinosaurs which have been discovered in the nearby area of Judith River. A full-scale model of a triceratops is on display at Garfield County Museum. Your children will definitely enjoy the interesting display and history at these museums. Besides the Missouri river is also a favorite spot for river crafting and other dangerous sports.
