The name "montana" has been derived from the Spanish word for mountain. With the high peaks of the Rockies, on the western side of the state, such a name alone could be appropriate. Today the Montana State occupies an area of 376,978 square km,and its geographical features of Montana quite variant.. Montana shares the international border of USA with Canada, which lies to the north of the state. To the south is the state of Wyoming, and to the west and south west lies the state of Idaho. the eastern part of the state is flanked by parts of North and South Dakota.

The diverse topography of the state is broken in places by the Great Continental Divide. A major portion of the land falls under the Prairie grasslands. Miles and miles of the landscape here are vast grasslands. The prairies in this part of the globe are a rich source of fodder for the cattle and livestock. However there are also Island Ranges around the foothills of the Rockies and they form an important part of geographical features of Montana . The island ranges include Sweet Grass Hills, Bull Mountains, Snowy mountains, Little belt Mountains, Crazy Mountains and Castle Mountains. The tableland of prairies are thinly populated with pockets of human inhabitance spread here and there.
To the east of the Great Continental divide can be spotted various instances of rock formation. The Missouri breaks and these rock formations are an unique aspect of geographical features of Montana . Weathered over the centuries the soil of this region is rich in igneous rocks and a whole lot of minerals and coal. The Rockies at Montana are a source of many major river systems of the land. Besides river Missouri and Columbia many smaller rivers of the region drain the three major watersheds Around USA. Vegetation of the region mainly consists of vast grasslands. Among the major trees birch,spruce,fir, red cedar,larch and some varieties of pine are common. Many species of mushroom, lichens, moss, cactus and sagebrush are also found in the region. With some of the major national parks of the country like Yellowstone National Park, Big horn Canyon National Recreational Park and National Bison Range, Montana is a hotspot for many holidaymakers.
