The Montana state animal is one of the most Montana State Symbols Grizzly bear is the state animal and Western Meadowlark is the Montana state bird. With a variant flora and fauna choosing the State butterfly was a difficult task. Out of the thousands Mourning Cloak was chosen the Montana State butterfly in 2001. With the vast prairies adorning the landscape Wheat grass alone could have been chosen as the Montana state grass. However, the Montana state tree is also a very important component of Montana state symbols. The Ponderosa Pine has been chosen as the State tree.
