The Big Hole Valley, one of the most pristine and rustic valleys in western Montana, is an unique experience for those looking for adventure. Enjoying a rather severe weather, the Valley is known for its historical significance and contribution. It is the site for the bloody Nez Perce War of 1877. Due to the weather conditions, the Big Hole Valley is sparsely populated and not all basic services has reached the same. The Valley draws its life, literally and otherwise, from the Big Hole river, which flows down from the Skinner Lake in Beaverhead mountains through the Valley to join the Jefferson river at Twin Bridges.

Flanked by the Beaverhead mountains and the Pioneer Mountains on either side, the Big Hole Valley is situated at a height of more than 6000 feet above sea level. Some of the big towns in the area are Wisdom, Dillon and Anaconda. The Big Hole river is one of the major tourist attractions in the region as it hosts the best conditions of trout fishing and Arctic Grayling, one of the endangered species of the region. There are other forms of recreational activities in the region as well, such as rafting and other forms of activities. The Big Hole Valley during the winter season boasts of some popular adventure sports such as hiking, snowmobiling, camping, motorcycling, hunting, skiing and mountain climbing.
With development experts on a pressure to bring basic services to the region, the snow capped region is a home to many mountain animals including the wolverine, black bears, moose, mule and bobcat, among others. But the major form of industry in Big Hole Valley remains ranching. In fact, the Valley is known for its finest quality of hay. Some of the hot spots in the region are the Big Hole Battlefield, ghost towns, the boiling spring in Jackson.
