Granite Peak of Bear tooth Mountains

Granite Peak of Bear tooth Mountains is located in the southern part of Central Montana . The Granite peak is the highest point of the Bear tooth Mountains and the state of Montana and has an elevation of about 12799 ft. It is situated near the Still Water County and Carbon County border and lies within the Absaroka Bear tooth Wilderness in the Park County.

Granite Peak of Bear tooth Mountains is regarded as one of the most difficult mountain to climb with most of the mountaineers and hikers choosing to ascend the peak in a single day. The main stop over is the Froze to Death plateau where the climbers halt during their ascent. Its a known fact that after several initial attempts to Granite Peak of Bear tooth Mountains failed, the first successful ascent was made possible by Elers Koch. The climbing skills require technical precision for climbing the Granite Peak of Bear tooth Mountains. Poor visibility of the route at the peak altitudes due to bad weather is another reason as to why its so difficult to ascend the mountain.

It is very important to know one's limitation before embarking on the journey of the Granite Peak of Bear tooth Mountains. Since the mountain is not a walk up mountain it is suggested that one is aware of his/ her comfort level in the exposed conditions of the infamous Bear tooth weather.



To get there basically you can take up the three primary trail heads and approaches to the Granite Peak of Bear tooth Mountains. These are namely, West Rosebud (Avalanche Lake), West Rosebud (Froze-To-Death plateau), and the East Rosebud Trail head (Froze-to-Death plateau). While the West Rosebud (Froze-To-Death plateau) is a much easier terrain it is exposed to vigorous storms. The Avalanche Lake is a better choice as storms are rare but the terrain is rough and difficult. It is advisable to equip yourself with rope, harness, belay/rappel device and helmet.
