Triple Divide Peak

Sneak Preview:

The Triple Divide Peak is situated at an elevation of 8020 ft in the Glacier National Park ,Montana, USA. It belongs to the Lewis range of mountains which is located in the Rocky Mountains of the northern Montana, U.S.A. It is supposed to be the hydrologic apex point of all the continents of North America according to geophysical science. The Continental (Great) Divide and the Laurentian Divide culminate at the top peak summit. From the apex summit of Triple Divide Peak, begins the journey of the water bodies ending in three of the world's largest oceans namely, the Pacific ocean, the Arctic ocean (through the Hudson Bay) and the Atlantic ocean ( through Gulf of Mexico and the Hudson Bay). So its easy to understand as to why the peak has been named as Triple Divide Peak.

Type of Climate:

The best time to visit the place is later half of the year after the month of July. Sometimes the main route namely the Going-to-the-Sun Road does not open till the end of July. It all depends on the status of the road during the early June and July months, which sometimes remain close due to bad weather, landslides, avalanches, rock slides among other problems. Since there is dramatic weather change in the glacial region road closures are frequent. So it is advisable to know the conditions prior to visiting the area and get caught in a bad situation.

The Peak as a source of water:

The rainwater from the western part of Triple Divide Peak follows a long journey through the Flat head river, Clark Fork river, Columbia river and finally falls into Pacific ocean at Astoria, Oregon. After many brooks and creeks the water falls into the St. Mary Lake which feeds St. Mary River which in turn feeds 3 other rivers namely, the Old man River, Saskatchewan River, and the Nelson River. The water from the south eastern part of the peak feeds many rivers after several creeks before finally falling into to the Atlantic Ocean.
